VentureMan;
Yes you are taking a statin when you take RYR but the main difference is that the RYR has a natural cholesterol lowering substance as opposed to a chemically or man-made produced one in Mevacor. Mevacor is the popular statin drug with the active ingredient "lovastatin". The lovastatin in Mevacor is highly purified and concentrated while the ingredients in Hypocol (RYR) are not. For example, each 600 mg. capsule of Hypocol contains less than 2.4 mg. of lovastatin whereas tablets of Mevacor contain 10 mg. or more. RYR has been used in China for over 1,000 yrs. for medicinal purposes with no liver, kidney or muscle toxicity. Can you say the same for statin drugs? I believe what it really comes down to is that for people with borderline cholesterol (200-240), the lower strength RYR may be just enough to get that persons cholesterol down to acceptable levels and is a good alternative to statins and their side effects.
